Lower Antelope Canyon I
Near Page, AZ
Lower and Upper Antelope Canyons in the Page, Arizona area are probably the most photographed slot canyons in the US, if not the world, and for good reason. They are by far the most beautiful slot canyons I have ever been in. It is extremely difficult to photograph these canyons for many reasons. Obviously, with the interplay of light, they are technically difficult to photograph, but the hardest thing I found about shooting in these canyons is the fact that your mind gets so overloaded with compositional possibilities that you have a tough time deciding where to point your camera! As well, you have limited time to spend in these canyons so you have to move on... but you don't want to. I could pick one spot in these canyons and spend hours just shooting from that one spot. I think i could literally spend several hours a day, 365 days a year going into these canyons and never come out with two shots that looked alike.
The canyons are very well maintained by the Navajo guides that control entry and they go way out of their way to make sure you have a pleasurable experience. I found that the more serious photographers spent most of their time in the Lower canyon, which is quite a bit longer and more enclosed than the Upper canyon. However, the Upper canyon, affectionately referred to as the Corkscrew (and for good reason) has some wonderful features that you shouldn't pass up. Since it is a bit more "open" than the Lower canyon, it lets in more light and you can get those wonderful beams of light piercing through to the canyon floor. The Upper canyon is also the only one that has guided tours. On these guided tours, you get a very knowledgeable, and helpful, Navajo Guide who gives you a history of the canyon and the Navajo people. So, if you are ever in Page, Arizona, I highly recommend you go by and see these wonderful marvels of nature.
