Arch Rock & Moon
Alabama Hills, Eastern Sierra, CA
For the outdoor enthusiast, the Alabama Hills contain many hidden treasures such as this arch rock found on the western edge of this range of rounded, granite boulders. It is an interesting, short hike over to the arch but you have to pay close attention to see it or you might walk right past it. getting this shot was no easy task, either. At first approach, no one place presented itself as an ideal spot to set up a tripod. Due to the formations surrounding the arch, moving farther away and shooting with a telephoto wasn't a viable option, either. So, I set my shutter speed as high as I could get it without losing too much of the depth of field I wanted and shot with the camera hand-held with a wide-angle lens. I was afraid that I would not be able to get the moon in the image framed up through the center of the arch since the moon was dropping quickly and I had to wait for at least some sunlight to fall on the arch, otherwise the arch would have been a mere silhouette and the image would have been lost. But, just before the moon dropped below the horizon, the sun lit up the arch like a candle and I snapped as many frames as I could before losing the moon altogether. I spent hour upon hour climbing over boulders and roaming through these beautiful hills and I barely scratched the surface of what this area has to offer.
