Historic Steam Cannon Emplacement
Hilton Head Island, SC

I was thumbing through a book in our condo one afternoon that had been printed back in the early 1970s. In it, I stumbled across a picture of this old steam cannon emplacement that was somewhere on the island... the book didn't say exactly where, though. After doing some research, I discovered it was located somewhere within Port Royal Plantation, a private community that only allows residents to gain access. So, I made some calls and finally got a very nice gentleman working with the Coastal Discovery Museum who happened to live in Port Royal! He was able to arrange a pass for me so I headed down the next morning to get my shot. In the picture I had seen in the book, the beach extended all the way up to the emplacement, but that was over 30 years ago. Today, as you can see, there is quite a bit of vegetation that has overgrown the sand and pushed the beach farther out.
