Tree Silhouette
Eastern Sierra, CA

This view of the Eastern Sierra from White Mountain Road is a classic one. After shooting the sunrise early that morning, I noticed this tree off to one side of the trail that looked interesting. So, I climbed down to it and set up. I had originally envisioned a shot with the tree lit up by flash but decided to try a few shots with the tree in silhouette first. The sun hadn't quite reached the tree yet so setting my exposure was easy to accomplish this... as you can see, the sun was just beginning to hit the ground in front of the tree. Within about 3 minutes, however, the tree was in full sun. Even though this wasn't the shot I had seen in my minds eye, it just goes to show that shooting a scene in many different ways pays dividends... all the other shots I made of this tree failed miserably!
