Arizona Wave I
Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness, AZ

This section of the Coyote Buttes area, managed by the Arizona BLM, is truly a magical place. The delicate filigree of sandstone carvings is unlike any other place I've visited. Access to this area is strictly limited, with only 20 people per day allowed in to the area. Obtaining a permit is not always easy... I obtained a permit on my third attempt, in person at the BLM office located about halfway between Page, AZ and Kanab, UT. Once you arrive at the Wave, however, you'll agree, it is worth the wait. Access to the Wave is not, by any means, an easy undertaking. Be prepared for some strenuous hiking and good route-finding ability is a must. The area of the Wave is very small and can be easily missed if you don't have good directions. I tried to get out here as early as possible, hitting the trail before sunrise, but got sidetracked along the way and ended up not getting to the area until well after sunrise. However, the lighting was still fairly good and I got several nice images of the sandstone patterns. There were a few areas of pooled water from recent rains in the area which provided nice reflections to accent the images
